A legendary public figure, Maya Angelou passed away at the age of 86 in her Winston-Salem, North Carolina, home (5/28). Angelou had been battling a number of health problems although a specific cause of death has not been identified.
Maya's known for her work as a poet, novelist, professor and actress among other things. She led a colorful career and had a wide range of friends. Angelou was close friends with Oprah Winfrey, worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement, and maintained a close bond with Coretta Scott King, Common, etc. Angelou had been recognized for her many contributions to literature, film and more.
